Best for Infants

Suitable from 3 months + for infants who are rolling and sitting. The ideal first sleeping bag after swaddling phase is over.

What is a Jersey Sleeping Bag?

The Jersey Bag is an arms-out sleeping bag for infants and toddlers. It's slim-fit shape and stretchy organic jersey cotton material are similar to the fit and feel of a swaddle to help ease the transition out of swaddling to arms-out sleeping. We recommend this product as baby's first sleeping bag, after the swaddling newborn phase is over.

Materials & Care

Materials

Body: 55% Organic Cotton / 40% Bamboo Viscose / 5% Elastane
Sleeves: 95% Organic Cotton / 5% Elastane

The Jersey Sleeping Bag is made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton that is non-toxic and gentle on irritable skin. All ergoPouch fabrics are dyed with non-toxic water based dyes. The Jersey Sleeping Bag is reviewed by the Eczema Association of Australasia (EEA) as a skin-friendly product.

Care

How to wash and dry your Jersey Sleeping Bag
Gentle cold machine wash
Low tumble dry
Moderately hot iron
Dry cleanable
Do not use bleach based stain removers

When cared for properly, this product will last several years and can be used for more than one baby. Our TOGs don't lose their warmth ratings over time, but a gentle fluff up in the dryer on a low setting helps maintain the fibre's loft, allowing air to circulate more effectively.

For more information see our Washing & Drying Tips.

What is the difference between the Jersey Sleeping Bag and the Sheeting Sleeping Bag?

Our Jersey Sleeping Bag is an organic baby and toddler sleeping bag designed for arms-out sleepers (usually from around 3 months of age). The Jersey Bag is made from organic cotton and elastane, similar to how a t-shirt feels. It has a slim-fit, stretchy design and is recommended as baby's 'first sleeping bag' after the swaddling phase is over.

Our Sheeting Sleeping Bag is a wider-fit premium baby and toddler sleeping bag designed for older infants (from 8+ months of age) and toddlers who prefer more room in their pouch. It is made with a 400 thread count woven organic cotton fabric that is non-stretch, similar to the sheet on your bed. It feels smooth and luxurious on baby’s skin. The ergonomically designed bag features a wide-fit and unique stretch jersey cotton inserts on the sides and shoulders to allow babies to move more freely and stay comfortable while they sleep. Parents have reported the Sheeting Sleeping Bag is harder-wearing and longer-lasting through washes, although both will give you several years of use.

Both pouches are safe for sleep, come in multiple TOG ratings with options for sleeves or sleeveless, and filled with 100% organic cotton.

How do I choose the right size sleeping bag?

This decision comes down to your child's sleep style preference, and their weight and height. Our Sleeping Bags cover 3-12 months, 8-24 months and 2-4 years and 4-6 years old. Please see our Size Guide for dimensions.

A sleeping bag should be fitted around the neck and the armholes to avoid your baby slipping through, or prevent them from pulling the material over their mouth and nose. The sleeping bag should be bell shaped from the hips down, to help prevent dysplasia of the hip joint, and to allow for easy leg movement.

Our general recommendation for your child's progression through our sleeping bag range is:

0-3M - Swaddled (arms in or out) with our Cocoon Swaddle Bag
3-12M - Transition to a Jersey Sleeping Bag, which has a similar slim-fit design and fabrication to our Cocoons.
12-24M - Choose between a wider fit Sheeting Sleeping Bag, or for active toddlers who move a lot during sleep, a Sleep Suit Bag. The Sleep Suit Bag is also versatile for use in a 5-point harness.
2-3Y - Continue with your toddlers preferred pouch (Sheeting Bag or Sleep Suit Bag). Introduce a Toddler Pillow to help them learn to stay in one place during sleep.
3-4Y - Continue wearing a Sleep Suit Bag in 'legs' mode, or try a Sleep Onesie or 1.0 / 2.0 TOG PJ's for warmth under a blanket, while you blanket train and transition to a big bed.
4Y+ - Your big kid has graduated to sleeping with our TOG-rated Pyjama's and Convertible Quilt, congratulations!

Several of our Sleeping Bags/Suits come in sleeveless and sleeved versions in sizes from 3m+. As a general rule, choose sleeves when wearing in room temperatures below 21°C/70°F.

Can I get a Sleeping Bag with sleeves?

Yes, we have several sleeping bag options with sleeves across our 1.0 TOG, 2.5 TOG and 3.5 TOG Jersey Sleeping Bags, 3.5 TOG Sheeting Sleeping Bags and 2.5 TOG and 3.5 TOG Sleepsuit Bags and Sleep Onesies. We recommend using a bag with sleeves for room temperatures below 21°C. All sleeves on our pouches are made in a 1.0 TOG fabric, to prevent overheating during sleep. You can also opt to add our Arm Warmers to any sleeveless sleeping bag for extra warmth when needed, and layer underneath any pouch (ones with sleeves included) with Long Sleeve Layers for extra warmth.

What age does my child need to be to fit the arms-out Sleeping Bags?

Both the Jersey Sleeping Bag and the Sleep Suit Bags can be used from around 3 months old, or over 6kg. The Sheeting Sleeping Bag is suitable from 8 months old, or over 8kg. Please note that arms-out Sleeping Bags are not suitable for newborn babies; please use a Cocoon Swaddle Bag for newborn babies born full term / 37 wks +, and weighing over 2kg*. Please buy the appropriate size for your child’s weight (see our Size Guide for more information).

*A baby weighing 2kg+ can use the 00000 size safely. If you have smaller baby, please consult your paediatrician first. A baby weighing over 3kg is suitable for the NB 0000 size, and a baby weighing 3.5-4kg is suitable for the 0-3M size. Most newborn babies born at 38 wks + will fit the Newborn 0000 size.

Do I use blankets on top of the Sleeping Bag?

Our Sleeping Bags are TOG rated meaning they have an insulation grade making them warm enough to use for sleep without loose bedding, and are designed to replace blankets. It is recommended by safe sleep guidelines to sleep your child with their face and head uncovered in their cot, free from loose bedding, pillows and toys. Please follow our included What to Wear Guide for simple-to-follow instructions on how to layer underneath the sleeping bag, for warmth.

What should my child wear under a Sleeping Bag?

This will vary from a nappy (or underwear for toilet-trained toddlers), through to Bodywear and/or a Layer/Pyjamas depending on the room temperature. Follow our Room Thermometer and What to Wear Guide (included in your packaging) to layer appropriately underneath, according to your room temperature and what TOG pouch you use. ergoPouch's under Layers are also TOG rated to help make dressing for sleep easy.

How many Sleeping Bags do I need?

We recommend two lighter TOG bags, and two warmer TOG bags to see you through day and night sleeping, depending on your room temperature. Having two in each TOG provides one for wear if one is in the wash.

What is the difference between 0.2 TOG and 0.3 TOG? Which is better for hot weather sleeping?

For warm rooms above 22°C, we recommend either a 0.2 TOG (Jersey) or 0.3 TOG (Sheeting) bag. Note, there is no warmth difference between a 0.2 and 0.3 TOG bag; they simply have different TOG ratings due to their different fabrics.

When should I stop using Sleeping Bags?

This is a personal choice. You may find your toddler is ready to transition from a Sleeping Bag to a Sleep Suit Bag or Sleep Onesie once they start walking and want more leg freedom in the cot. However, many children continue to wear a Sleeping Bag or Sleep Suit Bag right up until they transition to a big bed with blankets (not before 2 years of age). Follow our Cot-to-Bed Transition Guide if you need help with this. Once your child is comfortable with blankets, they can stop using their pouch. Our customers tell us this usually happens anytime between 2.5–4 years of age, but a child can safely continue to wear a Sleeping Bag or Sleep Suit for longer if they wish. Our size range currently caters up to 6 years in the Sheeting Sleeping Bag, 8 years in the Sleep Suit Bag, and 12 years in the Sleep Onesie.

I was turned on to ergoPouch from a colleague that lives in Australia. The quality is so far beyond products I've found in the US, this is my 2nd order to the States and my baby is only 5 weeks old. Love it!
